Angel divine at WACA Tom Wald - 21 January 2002
Big Jo Angel took career best figures to lead Western Australia to a 10 wicket victory over Victoria and second place on the Pura Cup cricket table here today. Angel (6-52) became the fourth highest wicket taker in the domestic four day competition by passing New South Welshman Geoff Lawson (367) as he ripped through the Bushrangers' lower order early on the final day. The towering paceman helped WA bowl Victoria out for 185 in its second innings before the Warriors' Justin Langer (44 not out) and Michael Hussey (22no) hit the 72 runs needed for victory in just 22.3 overs without losing a wicket. Angel's demolition job at the WACA ground moved him to 369 wickets and continued the Bushrangers' wretched season. Victoria was anchored at the bottom of the Pura Cup standings on six points after the heavy defeat. But the Warriors (16 points) took a big step toward a final berth by moving two ahead of third placed South Australia with four matches to play. Angel, 33, ensured an early finish by dismissing Darren Berry (25) and captain Paul Reiffel (duck) in the third over of the day after Victoria had resumed at 5-135. The veteran speedster then bowled Jon Moss (51), ending his 26 run stand with Colin Miller, to move past Lawson's mark. The performance of Moss, 26 - who also hit a gritty 70 in Victoria's 272 first innings - was a rare highlight for last year's Pura Cup finalist. WA paceman Matthew Nicholson (3-56) denied Angel a chance at his first 10 wicket match haul when Miller (eight) feathered a catch to stand in wicketkeeper Hussey. But Angel ended the innings at 185 by dismissing Michael Lewis (nine) off a sharp catch in slips by Warriors captain Langer. A question mark remained over the fitness of regular keeper Ryan Campbell who didn't return to the field after tea yesterday. Campbell, who made his one-day international debut last Thursday in Sydney, was said to be resting a thigh injury as a precautionary measure. Langer's knock helped him bring up 1000 first class runs in a summer for the fourth time. Campbell was still expected to be named in the Warriors team for the Pura Cup match against Tasmania starting on Friday in Hobart. Angel said the win was good for the Warriors as it kept the team's destiny in its own hands. Despite today's impressive haul, the ageless quick did not see himself making it anywhere near Clarrie Grimmett's domestic record of 513 wickets. "I think it's pretty safe, it's a long way away. I don't think anyone's going to get close," he said. "I think you have to start playing when you're about 12." © 2002 AAP
