PCB policy on India unchanged 21 January 2002
Lt Gen Tauqir Zia reiterated Sunday Pakistan Cricket Board's policy of playing India remained unchanged despite renewed calls of "no cricket" from across the border. Tauqir, the chairman of the PCB, told Dawn that Pakistan have already shown their willingness to play India at any venue in the world, and the latest threats do not merit a change in the board's policy. "I cannot fight with their government but I am certainly going to take up this matter at the ICC (International Cricket Council) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) levels," said the general who is also the head of the continental body. Indian sports minister Uma Bharti had said Saturday that her government would not allow any cricket with Pakistan until Islamabad took appropriate measures to stop cross border terrorism in Kashmir. But Tauqir said that those were the Indian minister's views and that he was not bothered by such statements. Tauqir said that in next month's ACC meeting slated to be held in Sharjah on Feb 13, a proposal would be put before him by a three-man committee constituted to recommend penalties for countries not fulfilling their commitments. The committee comprising Jagmohan Dalmiya, Ehsan Mani and Zakir Hussain Syed, was formed last year at the ACC meeting in Lahore before the Asian Test Championship. © Dawn Source: Dawn Editorial comments can be sent to Dawn at webmaster@dawn.com |
