Campbell turns match WA's way
Tom Wald - 19 January 2002

A quickfire half century from Ryan Campbell today propelled Western Australia towards first innings points at stumps on day two of its Pura Cup match against Victoria.

Campbell appeared to still be in one-day mode at the WACA ground after returning from international duties on Thursday in Sydney.

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 61 off 73 balls before he was caught behind by Darren Berry off the bowling of Bushrangers captain Paul Reiffel (1-43).

He revived the wobbling Warriors innings after coming in at 4-123 on a slow pitch on which the ball has had the better of the bat in the opening two days. But he left the home team with some work to do as it needs 32 runs with four wickets in hand to pass Victoria's total.

Brad Hogg is unbeaten on 38 with Kade Harvey 10 not out.

Earlier today big Jo Angel (3-58) mopped up the Victorian tail to limit the visitors to 272 after resuming at 6-226.

He removed Bushrangers captain Reiffel (five) in the sixth over of the morning with Mike Hussey taking a sharp catch in slips to his left.

Colin Miller (17) was next to go after hitting the veteran quick for three fours in consecutive deliveries, he poked a simple catch to Matthew Nicholson at gully. And Jon Moss (70) only added ten runs to his overnight score before Hussey took another well-judged catch, this time on the boundary at deep square leg off debutant Michael Clark's (3-49) bowling.

Michael Lewis (eight) was the last man to go, caught behind off Angel for eight while Mathew Inness was left unbeaten on one.

Warriors captain Justin Langer (34) started the run chase positively before he chopped a Miller delivery onto his stumps.

His opening partner Hussey (18) soon joined him after he badly misjudged a Lewis (2-27) delivery by letting it cannon into his off stump without offering a shot.

Number three Simon Katich (34) and Murray Goodwin (26) then put on a 55-run partnership before Katich's luck ran out.

After receiving lives on 11 and 30 he was out to a great diving catch by Berry off an inside edge off the bowling of Inness (1-35).

Goodwin then started to show glimpses of form before medium pacer Moss trapped him in front.

Scott Meuleman (five) scratched around for almost an hour before feathering to Berry off Lewis.
