England women break world batting record in Lucknow
ECB Media Release - 15 January 2002

England's opening batters Caroline Atkins (Sussex) and Arran Thompson (Lancashire) have broken the world record for an opening partnership today, scoring 200 before the loss of a wicket against India in Lucknow.

The previous record of 178 was held by Australia openers Haggett and Clark, also against India, in Sydney 1990.

Opening for just the seventh time together, and in only their third test match, 21-year-old Atkins was run out for 90 and 19-year old Thompson went on to make 85 before being bowled. The partnership lasted 450 minutes and 123.2 overs.

Atkins admitted: "We were just really pleased to have that much time at the crease, and for us starting out as openers together it's great for our development and learning. It's given the team a great basis for this game and hopefully the future."

England were eventually bowled out for 314 on day two of the four day test match, and in reply India were 21 without loss at the close.
