Gillespie has fitness test
Valkerie Mangnall - 5 January 2002

Australian paceman Jason Gillespie will know tomorrow whether he can resume his international cricket career after undergoing a fitness test on his injured right shoulder today.

Gillespie, 26, has been selected to play for Australia A in a one-day match against New Zealand in Brisbane on January 8, but his position hinges on the result of today's hit-out.

The South Australian quick was pleased with how he felt after bowling under the supervision of Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott in the nets at the SCG this afternoon while his Test team-mates stitched up a 3-0 whitewash of their series against South Africa.

"I felt alright, the ball seemed to come out okay, it feels pretty good at this stage," Gillespie said.

"Errol told me to try to push a few through after a bit of a warm up and I did that and it felt pretty good.

"It's hard to tell first proper bowl back so just judging from there, it seems pretty good at the moment."

He bowled about eight overs in 30 minutes to Australia A coach and former Australian skipper Allan Border and was not afraid to let loose, unleashing a bouncer and a good-natured sledge when the ball was ducked.

After Border turned to watching media and said: "He's just failed his fitness test", Gillespie felt the need to make amends.

"He played well ... I couldn't get through that defence, that's for sure, too good for me," Gillespie told reporters.

Gillespie, whose career has been marred by injury, suffered a strain to one of the rotator muscles in his right bowling shoulder during the first Test against South Africa in Adelaide last month.

The complaint flared two days before the second Test in Melbourne and he has been sidelined since, ending a run of 16 consecutive Test matches for the South Australian.

"It was a new injury for me, another one, and I just didn't know what I was meant to be feeling so it was a bit of an unknown quantity," he said today.

While the Australian one-day squad has been named for the first three matches of the triangular series with South Africa and New Zealand from January 11, Gillespie said he had ambitions of cracking the national team later in the season.

"If I get through my fitness test and the Australia A games, hopefully I'll make myself available for selection for the Australian side after the first three one-dayers," he said.
