Tasmania-SA match a Pura Cup semi final: Cox
Sam Lienert - 28 February 2002

Tasmanian cricket captain Jamie Cox says his team will effectively be involved in a Pura Cup semi final when it takes on South Australia at Adelaide Oval starting tomorrow.

SA is behind Queensland in second place on the Pura Cup table with 20 points, with Tasmania and Western Australia locked in third place on 18 points.

WA is playing Victoria in Melbourne, then meets SA in the final round of matches.

Tasmania meets NSW in the last round.

Any state could still make or miss the Pura Cup final, but Cox said Tasmania had the advantage of playing the team it needs to overtake on the ladder to secure a berth in the play-off, which means it does not have to rely on other results.

"We're pretty much approaching this as a semi final," Cox told reporters.

"We know if we come here and win there's some positive things at the end of it.

"We've got NSW last at home, which has been a pretty good venue for us in recent times, so we've certainly come here wanting to do well, we want six points.

"It's nice once again, after two or three games ago not having any say in the competition, to once again have our destiny back in our own hands, it's a nice feeling."

SA captain Greg Blewett said his side had a similar approach, given its two remaining matches are against its nearest rivals for second spot.

"Both Tasmania and WA are two points below us so it's a perfect scenario for us, we play Tassie this game and WA in the last game in Perth," he said.

"We know if we play well we hold all the cards, really, and we know where we stand, so it's perfect for us.

"Any points are going to be pretty handy this game, we'll definitely be out to play for six points, if we do that we're a fair way towards getting into the final."

Both sides have named squads of 13 players, which will be reduced to 12 tomorrow morning.

Squads: SA: Greg Blewett (capt), David Fitzgerald, Ben Johnson, Chris Davies, Ben Higgins, Nathan Adcock, Bradley Young, Graham Manou, Mike Smith, Peter McIntyre, Paul Rofe, Paul Wilson, Mark Harrity.

Tasmania: Jamie Cox (capt), Scott Mason, Shannon Tubb, Michael Dighton, Sean Clingeleffer, Scott Kremerskothen, Daniel Marsh, David Saker, Gerard Denton, Damien Wright, Shane Jurgensen, Michael Di Venuto, Xavier Doherty.
