Tick for effort but still work to be done says Fleming
Lynn McConnell - 26 February 2002
New Zealand got a tick for their one-day efforts this summer, but nothing more, from captain Stephen Fleming.
Winning the National Bank Series over England, reaching the finals of the VB Series in Australia and performing well against Australia generally had been goals for the side this year and they had achieved that.
Now it was on to the Test series.
"You could say there were things you could do better. If we had started out at the start of the summer and said we would achieve them I think we would have taken them," he said.
Last night's win had been helped by holding England to a score of 218/8.
"It comes back to the three wickets at the start. It's always a good sign that if you can chip away a couple towards the middle and end that you can deny a run rate and we did that.
"Chris Cairns came back and bowled a very good spell, picking up wickets and as we have seen ourselves it stunts any chance of getting a big score. We were delighted with our bowling effort and our fielding effort.
"They [England] had a period of dominance with a partnership and it took five or six good deliveries from Daryl Tuffey, in particular, to create a mistake and that gave us the opening which was great," Fleming said.
He expects the rest of the summer to feature some tough cricket.
"It has ebbed and flowed nicely, it's really come down to who has grabbed the ascendancy and the team that was more desperate on the day has won. We started with a hiss and a roar and I guess we lost the edge when we were 2-0 up and no matter what work you do you need individual performances to probably win a series early and they came back very well which is a characteristic of their side," he said.
"We had seen that in India and from what I had heard and seen in the media they actually pride themselves on it.
"We were up against it but we also play very well when we are desperate and coming down to this we knew that the summer's performances in one-dayers depended on a win today and that's how we treated it," he said.
