World Cup pool likely next week 23 February 2002
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to announce its pool of 25 players for next year's World Cup by the end of this month. A top Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said Friday that the selectors had been assigned the task a couple of months back. "But now they have been given Monday's deadline to submit the names. Hopefully, we will announce the name after discussions later in the week," he said. He stressed that all the players were available and best boys will be picked. "Current performance in international as well as domestic circuit will be given due consideration. "But the selectors will also keep in mind the South Africa conditions and the demands of prestigious and pressure event like World Cup." The PCB plans to rotate the players from its pool in the coming one-day games besides involving them in training camps. The likely 25 are: Saeed Anwar, Shahid Afridi, Taufiq Umer, Imran Nazir (openers), Faisal Iqbal, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, Hasan Raza, Naved Latif (middle-order batsmen), Rashid Latif, Moin Khan (wicketkeepers), Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis (captain), Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Mohammad Zahid, Fazle Akbar (pacers), Shoaib Malik, Saqlain Mushtaq, Danish Kaneria (spinners), Abdur Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan and Yasir Arafat (allrounders). Meanwhile, Pakistan team's training camp for the Asian Test Championship final against Sri Lanka will start at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore from March 1.
