Gillette Cup attracts entries from 164 secondary schools
New Zealand Cricket - 22 February 2002

The Gillette Cup national knockout one-day cricket competition will be contested by 164 secondary schools across the country this year.

Current champions Wellington College defeated Auckland's Kelston Boys' High School late last year to claim the title.

The competition is a breeding ground for future CLEAR Black Caps. Since its inception in 1990 over thirty players have emerged through the Gillette Cup Finals to play first-class cricket, with eight subsequently going on to play for the CLEAR Black Caps. They are Matthew Bell, Mathew Sinclair, Brendon McCullum, Hamish Marshall, Jacob Oram, Scott Stryris, Robert Kennedy and Andrew Penn.

Over the last decade the Gillette Cup has become synonymous with secondary school boys' cricket and is a showcase for our outstanding young cricketers.

Mathew Thompson, Product Manager, SellAgence Limited, representing Gillette explains "Gillette is proud to be associated with such an exciting competition. Through the Gillette Cup, we hope to promote a healthy inter-school competition while playing a key role in the development of youth cricket."

The Gillette Cup is a knockout competition based on eight geographical zones, six in the North Island and two in the South Island. This year 164 teams have entered the Gillette Cup making it one of the largest secondary school team events in New Zealand.

The draws and results of matches can be viewed on New Zealand Cricket's website www.nzcricket.co.nz.

Once zone winners are found, they play against their adjoining zone to determine four interzone winners who contest the Gillette Cup finals.

This year's finals are to be held in Palmerston North from December 8-10.
