St.Cross head the way with unbeaten record Mike Vimpany - 11 February 2002
St Cross Symondians are sitting proudly at the top of the NatWest Bank Under-16 Indoor League after winning their first four matches at the Hampshire Rose Bowl. They are the only undefeated side after six rounds of fixtures and lead Fair Oak by ten points.
They crushed both Locks Heath and BAT Sports last weekend, but know they will have to pull out all the stops again on Sunday, particularly in the evening's opener against Andover. But if St Cross reproduce the form which swept aside much fancied BAT they will be on course to clinch one of the championship play-off places on April 14. For much fancied BAT Sports, though, it's back to the drawing board - the Totton club having stumbled to a last ball win over Locks Heath before being beaten out of sight by St Cross. The young Symondians ran BAT off their feet, with James Irving-Fortescue (26), Tom Postle (25) and Jack Lovett (23) steering St Cross towards a competition-best total of 143-2. BAT, bowling erratically, batted as poorly with only Paul Proudley (23) making a worthwhile contribution in a dismal 62 all out. Joe Lovett, at 12 years of age arguably the youngest - and probably the smallest - player in the entire Under-16 competition, bowled well, returning 2-16. Young Joe maintained an effective and nagging line throughout his three overs, claiming the creditable figures. Gareth Ransley, with scores of 34 and 41 respectively, did his best for Locks Heath but was unable to avert defeats by St Cross and BAT. Locks Heath made 112-4 against St Cross, only to be swept aside, but took BAT to a dramatic last ball finish before Ricky Rawlins (26) nicked the winning last ball run. © SPCL
