Recalls for Nevin and Tuffey for first two One-Day Internationals
New Zealand Cricket - 10 February 2002

The New Zealand selectors have recalled Wellington wicket-keeper and top order batsman Chris Nevin and Northern Districts medium pace bowler, Daryl Tuffey, to the CLEAR Black Caps for the first two One-Day Internationals in The National Bank Series.

The 12-man squad is:

Stephen Fleming (captain)
Andre Adams
Nathan Astle
Shane Bond
Chris Cairns
Chris Harris
Brendon McCullum
Craig McMillan
Chris Nevin
Daryl Tuffey
Daniel Vettori
Lou Vincent

Left out of the squad which contested the Finals of the VB Series are Scott Styris, Mark Richardson, Adam Parore, James Franklin and Dion Nash. Nash was not considered due to injury.

Chairman of selectors, Sir Richard Hadlee, said the changes to the squad aimed to address the problems at the top of the order and would also freshen up the side after a lengthy campaign in Australia.

"Chris Nevin comes into the side as an opening batsman and wicket-keeper. His selection provides for a new combination at the top of the order and is aimed at getting the innings off to a more positive start.

Hadlee said the selectors had also looked to bolster the middle-order batting and Nevin's selection would also provide an opportunity to move Lou Vincent down the order.

"Daryl Tuffey gets his opportunity at the expense of James Franklin," Hadlee said.

"Tuffey was outstanding last season and with this selection he has a chance to re-ignite his international career."

Hadlee said the team would need to refocus after the disappointments of the past two games and bringing new players into the side would help in this regard.

"There are just three days before the first One-Day International on Wednesday and it is vitally important that the team move on from the disappointment of not playing well in the last two games in Australia. The inclusion of two new players will help to freshen-up the side and provide the team with a positive and enthusiastic outlook."

The first One-Day International between the CLEAR Black Caps and England starts at 2pm at Jade Stadium Christchurch on Wednesday 13 February.
