West Indies call up Runako Morton to Sharjah Derrick Nicholas - 8 February 2002
The West Indies selectors today called up the in-form Nevis and Leeward Islands all-rounder Runako Morton, to travel to Sharjah as replacement for the injured Marlon Samuels. Morton, who has scored 294 runs so far in this year's Busta Cup (the most by any batsman), at an average of 73.50 runs per innings - including one century and two half centuries - has been rewarded for his good form and consistency by the selectors. The 23-year-old Morton departs the Caribbean on Saturday and is expected to arrive in Sharjah late on Sunday to take the place of Samuels, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Wednesday in the Gulf state. Morton represented Nevis in the Leeward Islands youth and senior championships before gaining selection to the Leewards senior side four years ago. Following a fruitful Busta Cup season two years ago, he was among 20 players called to a West Indies training camp in Jamaica prior to the two-Test home series against Zimbabwe, but was not selected. Sherwin Campbell, the former West Indies vice-captain, whose right little finger was broken during the opening Test against the Pakistanis, will not be returning home and should be fit in time for the second limited-overs international of the three-match series, starting on February 15. © CricInfo Ltd
