Powell reappointed Warwickshire captain with Brown as vice-captain Ralph Dellor - 7 February 2002
Michael Powell, who was appointed to captain Warwickshire last season at the age of 25, has been confirmed in the post for the 2002 season by the county committee. Although he had a somewhat disappointing time with the bat in 2001, scoring 755 first-class runs at an average of 31.45 compared with his thousand runs the year before at 43.58, he was generally considered to have coped well with the responsibility of leading the side. Warwickshire gained promotion from Division Two of the Cricinfo Championship and finished third in Division One of the Norwich Union League. The side also reached the semi-final of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy where there was a defeat at the hands of eventual winners of the competition, Somerset. With Powell's vice-captain last season, David Hemp, having returned to Glamorgan, all-rounder Dougie Brown has been appointed to the position for 2002. Brown, a Scotsman who has represented England in 9 one-day internationals, made his debut in 1992 and has been a key member of the successful Warwickshire sides ever since. Last season in first-class cricket he averaged a shade under 40 with the bat and took 42 wickets at a fraction over 30 each. © CricInfo
