Northamptonshire release Innes and Weekes Media Release - 5 February 2002
Northamptonshire have released all-rounder Kevin Innes and pace bowler Lesroy Weekes from the final year of their contracts. Innes, 26, joined the staff in 1992 after making his debut for the club's Second XI in 1990 at the age of 14 years 8 months – a Northamptonshire record. He managed only 21 first-class appearances in ten summers on the books, but was a more regular performer in one-day cricket, playing 56 games in the three limited-overs competitions. Montserrat-born Weekes, 30, was signed by Northamptonshire before the start of 2001 season but turned out only once in the CricInfo Championship last season, against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Director of Cricket Bob Carter said: "We've been successful with our recruitment during the winter, signing six new players, but that in turn meant that Kevin and Lesroy were unlikely to get any first-team opportunities this season." "And with our policy of playing as many young cricketers as possible in the second team, there wasn't going to be a lot of cricket there for them either." "In fairness to them, we felt it was best to let them move on and look to further their careers elsewhere. Releasing them at this stage hopefully gives them a better chance of doing that, and obviously we wish them both well." Innes, born in Wellingborough and former pupil at Weston Favell Upper School in Northampton, said: "Obviously I'm sorry to be leaving the Northamptonshire set up, having been involved in it since I was six. But there comes a time to move on and I'll be looking for an opportunity somewhere else." "I've already been in touch with some other clubs and we'll see what develops." © Northamptonshire CCC
