QEA Trophy Second Round Day-1 Report Pakistan Cricket Board - 27 December 2002
Test off-spinner Arshad Khan captured seven for 25 to help Allied Bank bundle out Bahawalpur for 81 on the opening day of four-day second round Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match at the Bahawalpur Stadium on Friday. The lanky spinner from Peshawar mixed his deliveries well and virtually became unplayable as Bahawalpur, put into bat, lasted just 34.5 overs. Things might have been even more embarrassing for the home team had opener Mohammad Rashid not chipped in with an invaluable 33. When stumps were drawn for the day, the bankers had reached 165 for four with Ijaz Ahmed Junior batting on 50. Ijaz added 62 runs for the fourth wicket with Naved Latif who contributed 47. Mohammad Hasan Adnan stroked an unbeaten 100 as Wapda collected 243 against Lahore Blues at the Gymkhana Ground in Okara. Hasan Adnan batted for 176 minutes during which he received 122 balls. When curtains fell on the day's play, Lahore Blues were 28 for two. Seventeen wickets fell at the Sheikhupura Stadium where Habib Bank, put into bat, were bowled out for 155 - thanks to a six for 65 by paceman Waqas Chughtai. Nevertheless, the home team failed to make full use of Chughtai's efforts when they finished the day at 140 for seven. Stylish batsman Saeed bin Nasir missed a well deserved century at KRL Stadium when he ran out of partners and ended up on 93 in the home team's decent 307 against ADBP. Saeed struck 16 boundaries in his 139-ball knock that consumed 188 minutes. If there was a full day's play at the KRL Stadium in Islamabad, same cannot be said about the nearby Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium where only 25 overs were possible. Sheraz Khalid and Nauman Aman saved Rawalpindi's blushes when they added 55 for the unfinished fourth wicket partnership after Karachi Blues' Imranullah (three for 16) had left them reeling at eight for three. Pak PWD's budding paceman Rajesh Ramesh picked up five wickets for 91 runs to restrict Karachi Blues to 283 for eight at the National Stadium. For the home team, left-hander Agha Sabir was the top scorer with 52. Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik showed his bowling prowess when he captured five wickets for 27 runs to help PIA bowl out Peshawar for 144 at the Arbab Niaz Stadium. Paceman Umar Gul picked up three wickets for 65 runs while Aizan bin Ilyas took two wickets for nine. Home team's Zeeshan Mohsin carried his bat through when he finished undefeated on 64 that included eight boundaries from 132 balls he faced during 216 minutes of batting. At close of play on the first day, PIA had reached 54 for two with Ghulam Ali batting on 27 and Asif Mujtaba on nine. Off-spinner Naeem Iqbal claimed four for 35 runs to help Multan spin out Dadu for a paltry 149 in their backyard. The spinner came into action after the pace duo of Azhar Abbas and Farhan Abbasi jolted the top order with some fine fast bowling. Mohammad Salim fought a lone battle for the newcomers with a defiant 61 that came off 162 balls from 197 minutes of batting. He hit seven boundaries. At the LCCA ground, Asim Butt slammed a flawless 82 but Gujranwala failed to take advantage of batting first after winning the toss when they were dismissed for 179 by Lahore Whites. Butt struck 12 boundaries during his 158-minute vigil at the crease during which he received 140 balls. The damage for the home team was done by new ball partners Wasim Khan (4/63) and Khurram Chuhan (2/24) with left-armer Mohammad Hussain snapping up two for 37. When stumps were drawn for the day, Lahore Whites were 69 for one. Only 37 overs were possible at Sialkot where Customs, after being put in by Sialkot, had reached 125 for four. Charismatic left-hander Saeed Anwar, trying to reclaim his brilliant best, was batting on a 45-ball 23 in National Bank's 59 for three at stumps at the Iqbal Stadium against Faisalabad who had earlier been bowled out for 172.
