Wellington win two-day final

Wellington convincingly won the two-day section of the national Under-19 cricket tournament defeating Otago in the first innings of the match which concluded at New Zealand Cricket's facilities at Lincoln University today.

New Zealand Cricket assistant operations manager Catherine Campbell said the match was played in good cricket conditions on a pitch suited to batting.

Wellington won the toss and put Otago into bat, bowling the side out for 164.

The top scorer for Otago was Glendon Baird who reached 44 runs. The best bowler was Wellington's Brad Jones who took six wickets for 34.

Wellington scored 431 all out with centuries to James Hill (127) and team captain Simon Allen (105) in a sixth wicket partnership of 187.

In the second innings Otago scored 135 for three with Nick Morrison on 58 not out.

The one-day competition begins tomorrow with matches between Canterbury and Wellington and Central Districts and Otago.

The one-day competition will conclude with the finals on Monday.
