Shane Warne could be back bowling in four to six weeks after successful surgery on his right shoulder, it was announced today (Monday 16 December).
Warne had arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder after dislocating it during the VB Series match against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.
The surgery, which allowed the shoulder joint to be flushed clean of blood from the injury, also showed no problems other than ligament and cartilage damage consistent with an injury of this type.
Australian Cricket Board medical officer Dr Trefor James said: "The findings of the surgery represent a best-case scenario for Shane's recovery from this injury.
"With this positive news we are looking at a time frame of between four to six weeks for him to get back playing again.
"Shane has always been diligent in his rehabilitation and I am sure he will be doing all the right things to assist his recovery."
Shane Warne said: "I'm happy with the scenario and I'll do whatever it takes to get back on deck as soon as possible.
"I'd also like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all the support I've received. It really is much appreciated."
Earlier scans had shown no bone damage was sustained during the incident, which occurred when the leg-spinner, Australia's leading wicket-taker in Test and one-day international history, landed awkwardly as he dived to stop a ball during the 89-run win over England.
The time frame outlined by Dr James gives Warne a chance of being available for selection for the Cricket World Cup, with Australia's first match, against Pakistan in Johannesburg, scheduled to take place on 11 February.
"I am optimistic Shane could be available for the tournament but we will have a better idea as his rehabilitation progresses," added Dr James.
It is expected that Warne will now rest the injury for around a week before beginning work to regain movement as well as strengthening the shoulder joint.
