The Barbados Nation Lara gives Lequay wake-up call
Andi Thornhill - 12 December 2002

Ordinarily, you would expect Alloy Lequay to back Brian Lara's every move.

He has been there for him, it would seem, in his brightest and darkest moments.

It appeared to be more than a Trinidadian thing. It seemed to be paternal – like a father looking out for a son.

Lequay, the longserving president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board of Control, looked after Lara's interest at the West Indies Cricket Board level and has defended him in public more than once when the need arose.

His script was consistent, until now, that is.

There are Press reports coming out of Trinidad last week with Lequay suggesting that Lara has been disloyal to Trinidadian cricket.

Speaking at an official function last week he said: "I will say publicly, that Brian (Lara) has not made sufficient input into the development of Trinidad cricket.

"He doesn't seem to realise and appreciate that it is the Trinidad board that looked after him from a youngster, from the age of 15 and 16, and helped him to reach the state where he is now and he has turned his back on us at this point in time."

Lequay had earlier stated that Lara had not made himself available to be part of the team's preparations for next year's regional competition.

He lamented: "He has not responded to the invitation. We called him at his home. He said: `Yes, I believed I got the invitation. I read it among my letters and I will call you back,' but he never called back."

In other words, Lara, in local parlance, "dissed" the Trinidadian cricket authorities.

Judging from the tone of Lequay's observations and sentiments it appears that he is hurting. If indeed Lara has behaved in the manner in which Lequay has made public I could understand why he is hurting.

Ordinarily, I would sympathise with him but lest we forget that there were times when Lara acting like a law unto himself and was supported by Lequay. There is some truth in the old saying that what goes around comes around.

Evenso, this issue might turn out to be just another family quarrel which might be settled once Lara makes his whereabouts known to the cricket authorities in Trinidad.

Not me and that "Pele" case, bossie.
