Tigers looking to pounce on baby Warriors
Tim Clarke - 7 December 2002

PERTH, Dec 7 AAP - Tasmania will aim to kickstart its fledgling Pura Cup campaign when it faces one of the most inexperienced Western Australian sides ever at the WACA Ground tomorrow.

The Tigers have lost all four of their Pura Cup matches this season, but meet a Warriors unit without seven first choice players and possibly their best chance of an outright win this season.

Australian vice captain Adam Gilchrist, Damien Martyn, Justin Langer, Mike Hussey, Ryan Campbell, Brad Williams and Brad Hogg have all been called up for national duties next week, either for Australia or Australia A.

The Warriors have been further depleted with allrounder Kade Harvey called up for fast bowler Matthew Nicholson who injured ligaments in his right-arm in last night's ING Cup win over the Tigers.

Tasmanian coach Brian McFadyen said: "We have not had a great start to our Pura Cup campaign, so this is a good chance.

"The Western Australia side is depleted, but we are expecting them to fight just as any WA side would.

"You would normally hope to put pressure on the established players to try and get the upper hand, but in this match I suppose we will be looking to put more pressure on the debutants."

Wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi, 21, batsman Adam Voges, 23, and all-rounder Beau Casson, 19, will all make their first-class debuts for Western Australia, with batsmen Scott Meuleman, 22, and Geoff Cullen, 25, also returning.

The match will herald a remarkable turn around for veteran paceman Jo Angel, who was 12th man in WA's last first class match against Queensland in Brisbane - but will captain the side tomorrow.

He said: "They have all been picked because they are all good enough, and they are not along for the ride.

"They cannot be expecting a Murray Goodwin or a Paul Wilson to do it all - all the guys have got to do their bit."

The Tigers will also have a debutant amongst their line-up, with young allrounder Ben Oliver replacing Shane Watson who will be on international duty.

WA: Jo Angel (c), Murray Goodwin, Beau Casson, Michael Clark, Geoff Cullen, Kade Harvey, Scott Meuleman, Marcus North, Chris Rogers, Luke Ronchi, Adam Voges, Paul Wilson.

Tas: Jamie Cox (c), Sean Clingeleffer, Michael Dighton, Michael Di Venuto, Xavier Doherty, Adam Griffith, Shane Jurgensen, Scott Kremerskothen, Daniel Marsh, Scott Mason, Ben Oliver, Damien Wright.
