Guha wins BBC Asian Sports Personality of the Year Award Media Release - 2 December 2002
Isa Guha, the 17-year-old England player who 'Bowls it Like Botham' topped an exceptional debut year by winning the BBC Asian Sports Personality of the Year Award at the BBC's 'Mega Mela' celebration held at Birmingham's NEC on Saturday. Isa took a wicket in just her second over of one-day international cricket against India this summer, and became one of England's leading wicket-takers of the Series. She took eight wickets in her four ODI appearances, including three in the ODI Triangular Final against World Champions, New Zealand at Chester-le-Street. Guha's impact on the Final, and world stage, was immediate as she dismissed opener Nicky Payne for 0 with her second ball, swiftly followed by one of the world's best batters, the NZ Captain, Emily Drumm for just 15. Striving to emulate Botham, her cricketing hero, Guha also proved a useful middle-order bat but despite a top score against NZ could not prevent the tourists winning the overall competition. Although she was born four years after Botham received his BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award she admits that he was an inspiration for her as she learnt the game. "He played with real passion and freedom and was very exiting to watch - hopefully I have some of those qualities too." Isa will travel to Australia in December with the England Under-19 team, and hopes to regain her place in the England side following her A-Level exams next summer when England take on South Africa in three one-day internationals and two Test matches. © ECB
