Former England batsman Darren Maddy starred in an otherwise mundane Leicestershire reply after Surrey reached 540 in their first innings at Grace Road. Maddy finished with five for 104 as Rikki Clarke (95) extended the Championship leaders' total this morning. Maddy then made 81 as Leicestershire reached 265 for six at stumps, still 275 behind. Mushtaq Ahmed took three for 64 from his 25 overs.

A century from Alec Swann was the cornerstone of Lancashire's reply after Yorkshire were bowled out for 294 in the Roses Match at Old Trafford. Swann (112) featured in an opening stand of 140 with Mark Chilton (45). Although David Byas failed against his old county, Stuart Law made 47 and Lancashire declared on 301 for nine. The hapless Chris Taylor then bagged a pair as the visitors closed on three for one.

Second-placed Kent are in trouble at Edgbaston, after Jim Troughton (115) and Ashley Giles (68) boosted the Warwickshire first innings total to 565. Giles then imposed himself with the ball, taking three wickets as Kent ended the day on 191 for eight. Yet again Paul Nixon (70*) batted impressively, after New Zealand's Shane Bond had taken out the top three Kent batsmen.

Somerset got off to a shocker in their second innings at The Rose Bowl, after taking a slender lead against Hampshire. Ian Blackwell took five wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 236. Robin Smith (52) and John Francis (53) were the main contributors as the hosts surrendered a lead of 42. But Somerset then lost Jamie Cox and Matthew Wood, closing on 14 for two.

In Division Two, leaders Middlesex suffered the indignity of being forced to follow on by Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill was the main reason why, taking six for 54 as the visitors subsided for just 138. MacGill took two more in the second, but an unbeaten century by Andy Strauss and 52 from Sven Koenig ensured a more respectable effort. At stumps Middlesex were 180 for three, still needing 152 runs to make the hosts bat again. Earlier Kevin Pietersen finished unbeaten on 254 as Notts reached 470.

Derbyshire are facing defeat at the hands of Worcestershire at Derby. Steve Rhodes (83) and Shane Lee (48) carried the visitors to 320 before off-spinner Gareth Batty got amongst the hosts. Batty took five for 58 as Derbyshire closed on 193 for eight in their second innings, just 63 runs ahead. Steven Selwood is unbeaten on 99 overnight.

Gloucestershire ran up 422 as their match with Northants got under way at Bristol. Craig Spearman (71) and James Pearson (51) compiled an opening partnership of 137, and there were later contributions from the in-form Matt Windows (83) and Ian Harvey (79) At stumps Northants were 15 without loss.
