Tim Nielsen appointed Assistant Coach/Performance Analyst of Australian cricket team
The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) today appointed Southern Redbacks assistant coach Tim Nielsen to the new position of Assistant Coach/Performance Analyst of the Australian cricket team.
Nielsen, 34, will take on the new full-time role as part of Australian team management in September for Australia's International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy campaign in Sri Lanka.
His dual-function position will assist with the technical and practical coaching of Australian players, analyse the performance of Australia and its opponents and coordinate the team's video analysis and computer software operations.
ACB Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the appointment would provide the Australian team management structure with additional coaching support and greater flexibility in its operation.
"After a detailed review of Australia's current team management structure, a need was identified for an extra coaching resource and further player performance analysis," Mr Sutherland said.
"We took those considerations on board and began a detailed search to ensure we secured the best person for the job.
"Tim comes to the ACB with an extremely impressive background both as a first-class player and an assistant coach who has served an apprenticeship in South Australia under Greg Chappell," he said.
Upon learning of his appointment Nielsen said he was delighted to take on the role.
"Obviously I am very excited to be given the opportunity," Nielsen said.
"I am a professional coach, so when I saw the ACB position advertised, I tried to prepare as comprehensive a presentation as possible, to at least put myself in the picture.
"This has been a quick turn-around, and now that I have been appointed to the position, I am looking forward to the challenge at hand," he said.
Nielsen has been the Redbacks' assistant coach since August 1999, hot on the heals of a distinguished state playing career.
He played 101 first-class matches for South Australia between 1990-91 and 1998-99 as a talented wicket-keeper/batsman.
During his final season behind the stumps, he assumed the Redbacks captaincy in the absence of Darren Lehmann and Greg Blewett. He also holds the South Australian record for the most dismissals by a keeper (316).
Nielsen will be based in his home city of Adelaide and upon returning from the ICC Champions Trophy, begin preparations for Australia's home series against England and Sri Lanka.
He will not attend Australia's Test matches against Pakistan.
Australian coach John Buchanan said Nielsen would provide him with added support in his ever-expanding role as an elite-level coach.
"Tim is a multi-skilled individual, and that's just what we wanted when we were looking to fill this position," Buchanan said.
"He will be able to handle practical skill-based training, then turn his hand to a detailed application of technology.
"Tim has an outstanding cricket background, but just as importantly he is a quality person, so I look forward to him becoming part of the team management structure."
