Glamorgan beat Scotland by nine wickets
Andrew Hignell - 5 August 2002

Glamorgan beat Scotland by nine wickets in their 45 over friendly at Sophia Gardens.

Chasing a target of 226, the left-handed opening pair of Ian Thomas and Dan Cherry saw Glamorgan to within one run of victory - the second highest opening stand in a one-day game for Glamorgan - before Cherry was dismissed for a splendid 120.

Cherry had recorded his first one-day century for Glamorgan in the grand manner with a huge six over square leg off the bowling of Scottish captain Craig Wright. Cherry`s century also included 11 fours and he faced 105 balls.

After Cherry had returned to the pavilion with the scores level, Ian Thomas then drove the ball to the boundary to win the game with five balls to spare, and finish unbeaten on 89.

Earlier, some lively seam and swing bowling from the youthful Glamorgan attack had restricted Scotland after they had been put in by captain David Hemp. The visitors were soon in trouble, slumping to 5-3 in the 4th over as Damian Forder claimed wickets in both of his opening overs.

The former Gloucestershire bowler took a wicket with his first delivery for Glamorgan, and sent the middle stump flying as he yorked Scottish opener Rob More. Then with his eighth ball, Forder trapped Colin Smith, the Scottish wicket-keeper leg before. Forder eventually finished with 4-28 from his 9 overs, whilst David Harrison and Ian Thomas also took two wickets apiece.

Scotland were indebted to debutant Cedric English (107) for mounting a recovery that saw them reach 225-9. The young South African batsman shared partnerships of 91 with Douglas Lockhart, and 90 with Ian Stanger before becoming the first Scottish player to score a century on his national debut.

Also making his first appearance in the Glamorgan side was 16 year old Adam Harrison, the younger brother of all-rounder David Harrison. At 16 years and 279 days old, Adam is the youngest player to appear in a one-day game for Glamorgan since Alan Lewis Jones played against Worcestershire in a Sunday League match in 1973.
