ICF NEWS LETTER - June 2002

August 27, 2002

The ICF was formed in April 2000 by the JCA and BICC assisted and encouraged by the ICC. It was agreed that for the first three years, the Chairman for the first 18 months (April 2000 - December 2001) should be appointed from Jakarta (James Arthur) and for the second 18 months (January 2002 - June 2003) from Bali (Alan Wilson). This arrangement has worked very cohesively to form a national organization for cricket development of which we can be very proud. The ICF currently has two Full members (BICC and JCA) with three representatives each and three Affiliate Members (Bandung, Cilegon and Sumbawa) with one representative each.

The main achievements of the ICF are as follows:

  • the formation of a top quality magazine (GIMANA) to advertise and promote cricket in Indonesia. There have now been four issues which have been widely distributed in Jakarta and Bali. In general this magazine has been well received and the ICF hopes to maintain it's publication rate and quality

  • the acceptance of Indonesia as an Affiliate Member of the ICC. This major achievement has enabled the ICF to (a) apply for funding for various activities (b) attract ICC sponsored coaching programs (c) participate in international tournaments sponsored by the ICC (d) be invited to international training conferences on development of cricket in The East Asia & Pacific Region of the ICC and (e) be eligible for ICC supported partnerships eg with the WACA.

  • the formation of a National Cricket Training & Development Centre (NCTDC) at Udayana Eco Lodge (UEL), Bali. UEL now has four training nets, access to the Bukit oval (similar size to the Adelaide oval), a staff of five Indonesian national trainers with Level 1 ICC Training certificates and an international accommodation center capable of organizing cricket tours from overseas (advertised with the ICC). The Centre has been responsible for the formation of the national schools cricket training program (see details below). The NTDC has now developed it's first certificated ICF course for sports teachers in Indonesian schools

  • the development of a national schools training program by the NCTDC. This program has developed using two training models

    (a) using a group of "nine elite Indonesian national players" who now all have Level 1 ICC coaching certificates (under the teaching of Tim Anderson of the ICC). This model is currently only applicable in Bali as only at this center have elite players been developed. It must be emphasized that this group of elite players has taken many hundreds of hours from members of the BICC and millions of Rp from both personal and club funds.

The results after one year of this model have been:
    • cricket has been introduced into 24 schools (19 primary and 5 secondary) in the Denpasar area of Bali with over 2,400 children being touched by the
    game
    • an Under 15 league with four teams (Jimbaran, Kuta, Renon and Sidakarya) has been developed. The current leader is Jimbaran. From this league, a
group of "elite juniors" are now being developed. These kids have taken to the hard ball like a duck to water
    • the first all Indonesian Cricket Club The Jimbaran CC has been developed. This team is currently leading the Bali League and is playing Juniors in their adult side.

It is hoped that this model will be applicable to other areas where an elite group of Indonesian national players are developed. Kupang and Roti (NTT) are being examined for such a development.

    (b) use of school sports teachers which has now occurred in Bogor. At this site, two teachers have been identified and will be sent to Bali to attend a three day ICF certificated course run by Sony Hawoe (the national training coordinator). Sony Hawoe has personally developed this course which has the blessing of the ICC. This model is applicable in the Jakarta area but is dependent on identification of suitable participative schools. The Bogor model is exceptional as cricket is now being spread by sports teachers with no formal training.

The result of this model after only 14 days training have been:
    • cricket established in two primary schools at Ciomas, Bogor touching over 250 kids with the game
    • identification of two keen sports teachers in these schools who have agreed to undergo further training in Bali
    • formation of school teams which competed in the JCA organized expatriate school league. It is believed that they did not disgrace themselves - a remarkable achievement

It must be emphasized that the ICF cannot go it alone with either model. It needs the support of the cricketing community in Indonesia to assist in (a) funding trainers and (b) monitoring any developing program in their area.

  • the development of Indonesia's first ever national cricket team which participated in the ICC sponsored international 8's organized by the WACA in Perth in February 2002. The ICF appointed a group of selectors who chose a squad of 10 players (6 Indonesian nationals from BICC and 3 expats + 1 national from the JCA) + a Manager (JCA) and a Coach (BICC). This group of 12 met at the NCTDC for 2 days of pre tour training. They did well in Perth easily beating South Korea and being only narrowly defeated by Japan. Three players (Sony Hawoe, Zachariah Awang and Dave Herbert) were chosen in the East Asia team, a great achievement. The next ICC planned tournaments are a 50 over East Asia adult tournament in 2003 and an Under 15 in 2004.
  • the initial arrangements for a national cricket league have begun and it is hoped that this will occur using three areas this year. This will need considerable funding.

In summary, much has been achieved by the ICF is a short time. Those who have supported us a greatly appreciated and thanked.

The ICF is a unique marriage between the financial strength of Jakarta and the human resources developed in Bali.

We will go forward and ask those interested parties who have supported us in the past to continue to do so. We also ask others to commit themselves to a dynamic program, which already is greatly assisting the youth of Indonesia.

Alan Wilson,
Chairman,
Indonesian Cricket Foundation
