Somerset start the second day of their championship opener against Sussex knowing that it is unlikely that Steffan Jones will bowl again in the match.
The Cidermen lost the bowler after he broke down with a hamstring injury bowling up the hill at Hove during his second spell after lunch.
However coach Kevin Shine did not think that the injury was too serious. He told me: "Steffan felt the injury and pulled up immediately. He came off and Darren Veness got to work on it. He won't bowl again in this match, but it's unlikely that he will be out for too long. I don't think he'll be back for the Bensons game on Sunday, but Steffan is very fit so you can never tell."
Describing the first days play, during which Sussex scored 337 all out, and Somerset were four without loss before bad light brought a premature end to the day, the coach told me: "It was an interesting day with something for everyone. Murray Goodwin played some great shots, but we didn't bowl well in the first session, we lost our discipline a little. However we bowled much better in the last two sessions and pulled it back."
The coach continued: "Matt Bulbeck bowled really well, he swung it and got the ball in the right place most of the time and ended up with four wickets. Mike Burns also bowled really well and picked up three valuable wickets."
Kevin Shine concluded: "The boys are in great nick and have enjoyed a roller coaster of a day. We now look set for an interesting game."
