A record number of teams are likely to participate in the Africa Cup to be
staged in Lusaka, Zambia in August.
The Africa Cricket Association has issued invitations to 14 countries to
participate in the closest thing Africa has to a continental championship.
"We are just waiting to hear from Morocco, Mozambique and Seychelles," ACA
official, Mr. Rasheed Patel, said this week.
Should the three respond in the affirmative, it would mark their debuts at
the international level.
Mr. Patel said this year's tournament would probably be the last under the
current format - one which sees development teams from South Africa,
Zimbabwe and Kenya pitted against national squads from Nigeria and eastern
and southern African cricketing countries, including Uganda, Tanzania,
Namibia and the host, Zambia.
It is envisaged the next Africa Cup after 2002 will be more representative
of the entire continent and played in two stages - firstly, a qualifying
tournament contested by African non-Test nations apart from Kenya, which has
one day international status.
The winner of that tournament would proceed to a tournament involving full
strength South African, Zimbabwean and Kenyan teams.
