Winchester skipper Taylor in England soccer XI Mike Vimpany - 12 April 2002
Winchester KS cricket captain Jimmy Taylor has been selected to play for England ... at soccer. Besides being a prolific run scorer and dynamic fielder in Winchester's newly promoted Southern Electric Premier League Division 3, Taylor is no mean footballer. Indeed, his goalscoring exploits for local Doc Martens (Southern) League side Havant & Waterlooville have earned an International call up for England's Non-League XI. Taylor - and Havant & Waterlooville team-mate Tim Hambley - have been picked to lead the England attack in a non-league International against Holland at Yeovil Town on Wednesday April 24. Taylor hit the headlines two seasons ago, notching the Doc Marten's League Golden Boot award after hitting 32 goals for Waterlooville. The Winchester cricketer, who also plays Minor Counties Championship cricket for Wiltshire, has hit 32 goals already this season for the merged club and, being joint Premier League top goalscorer, is in line for another award. Taylor and Hambley, who have scored 50 goals between them this season, are the only Doc Marten's League players in a 15-man squad, which is otherwise drawn from Nationwide Conference clubs. Their selection follows impressive performances for an FA XI in the 3-1 win over the Combined Services, in which Taylor scored one of his 32 goals so far this season. Hambley, who has hit the target 18 times this season, captained the FA XI at Uxbridge. If Hambley and Taylor shine against the Dutch, they will be in line to lead the England attack in next month's Home International Non-League matches with Ireland and Scotland. That could lead to Winchester being without their influential cricket captain for the start of the new Southern Electric Premier League season. © Michael Vimpany
