Powell and Thomas lead Glamorgan to another win
Andrew Hignell - 9 April 2002

Glamorgan recorded the second win of their pre-season tour to Cape Town, beating a Western Province Academy XI by four wickets in a 50 overs contest at Uitsig yesterday.

The Welsh side were indebted to Mike Powell and Darren Thomas who shared a blistering partnership of 172 runs in a mere 19 overs, and all after Glamorgan, who had rested Steve James and David Hemp, had slumped to 67-6 chasing 237 to beat the Academy side that contained some of the leading young players in the Cape.

Both Thomas and Powell hit rapid half-centuries, with Powell reaching 50 off 48 balls, whilst Thomas smashed 50 from just 34 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 6 fours. Thomas finished unbeaten on 73, with Powell 86* as the county reached their target with 12.5 overs to spare.

Earlier in the day, Robert Croft had been the pick of the Glamorgan bowling, taking 2-21 from his 10 overs. Darren Thomas, Dean Cosker and Adrian Dale all chipped in with two wickets apiece, as the Academy were restricted to 236-9.
