Trojans gearing up for 2002 with extensive refurbishments Richard Isaacs - 24 September 2001
Considerable work is being undertaken this weekend at Stoneham Lane, as Trojans Cricket Club's players and officials make an effort to upgrade the facilities. Club captain Simon Williams and his players, who have taken some criticism from many clubs over the level of their ground and surroundings, will be installing a new score box amongst other vast improvements to their home. The score-box, which will replace the delapitated ancient box attached to the pavilion, will be based nearer the pitch. Cricket chairman and general Trojans clubman Wyn Jones announced the club have ordered four new sightscreens to comply with the leagues accreditation rulings and are currently in discussions with a sponsor for the provision of covers, which are expected to be in place early next year. He said, "This should help with the early season weather conditions and should help negate the effect of showers on the day preceding matches". The main club and the rugby sections have already begun the upgrading of the changing room and shower area facilities, including improved security measures, always a worry at the open clubhouse. Meanwhile, the junior cricket side have purchased a roll-up cricket strip and the Hampshire Youth Development set-up, helping improve their fortunes. With other minor matters, including sponsorship banners, Trojans are tidying up their act, in a hope of assuring their silver placing in the Southern Premier League for 2002. "Everyone is getting involved, and we are hoping to make it a bit of fun too", said Williams. "Planning a barbeque and a few drinks for all involved." © SPCL
