Former Somerset player Neil Mallender was recently presented with the coveted Umpire of the Year Award by the Professional Cricketers Association at their Annual Dinner.

The former right arm fast bowler who celebrated his fortieth birthday recently started his playing career with Northants in 1980 before moving to Somerset in 1987. He was awarded his county cap that same year and went on to play twice for England in 1992. He left Taunton in 1994 to return to Northants.

During his time with the Cidermen he played in 118 first class matches, and took 329 wickets at an average of 25.78 runs each.

Neil was appointed to the first class umpires list in 1999,and since that time has earned himself a reputation as one of the best of the younger umpires on the circuit.
