After losing their match against Norfolk in the second round of the 2002 Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy as a result of no play being possible on the second day Somerset Board Eleven Manager Peter Robinson told me, "We were robbed of the opportunity to play against a first class county in the third round next season. I have never been so exasperated over a cricket match as I have over this one."

He went on, "I would like to know what would have happened if a first class county had lost to Norfolk in these circumstances. We were the only team that didn't play."

In the play that was possible Somerset won the toss and put a full strength Norfolk side, who had recently won the 38 County Trophy into bat. Thanks to a fine spell of bowling by left armer Matt Bulbeck, who had figures of 5 for 18 off 9.1 overs, Norfolk were bowled out for 173 in the 49th over. Bulbeck was well supported by Pete Trego who ended with 2 for 21 off 9 overs and Rob Travers who took 2 for 26.

By close of play on the first day Somerset Board Eleven were in a good position, and had scored 61 for 2, with Kevin Sedgebeer going well on 30 not out.

The weather forecast for the final day was good, and the Board Eleven were looking forward to the possibilty of entertaining First Class opposition next season.

After a bright start to the last day a sea fret set in which stayed until the middle of the day, preventing any play. Despite a beautiful afternoon the umpires deemed that no further play was possible and at 5.30pm the game was abandoned and awarded to Norfolk on the basis that they had a faster run rate.

The Man of the Match Award was given to Matt Bulbeck for his fine bowling performance.
