Two Derbyshire players awarded county caps Nigel Gardner - 12 September 2001
There was consolation for two Derbyshire players after another miserable day for the county. Steve Stubbings and Graeme Welch were presented with their county caps by skipper Dominic Cork during the lunch interval on the opening day of the match with Warwickshire. Stubbings completed 1,000 runs for the season in the previous game against Gloucestershire while Welch is the county's leading wicket-taker with 43 Championship wickets. Stubbings has scored three centuries and six half-centuries during a summer in which he has developed into a solid opening batsman. Welch moved from Edgbaston to Derby during the winter and, at times, has carried the attack when Kevin Dean was injured and Cork was away on England duty. © CricInfo Ltd.
