Essex Appoint Graham Gooch as Head Coach Essex CCC Media Release - 9 September 2001
Former Essex and England Captain Graham Gooch is to take over from Keith Fletcher as Head Coach of the Club at the end of the season. Gooch (48) will be implementing a new cricket structure at the Club when he takes up his position in early October. On his appointment Graham Gooch commented: "I am delighted that the Club have asked me to take on this hugely challenging role. It is quite clear that the playing squad needs to be strengthened this winter and we will all be doing our utmost to ensure that the performances on the field in 2002 are greatly improved over the disappointments of this season. Everyone involved with the Club wants to see Essex return to successful days and to once again be one of the strongest and most respected County Cricket Clubs in the country". John Childs will become Graham Gooch's Assistant Coach and Keith Fletcher moves into a development of excellence role working behind the scenes to identify future talent. Excellence Coach Geoff Arnold will be leaving the full time employment of the Club, although it is hoped that his skills may be employed on a consultancy basis. On Gooch's appointment, Chief Executive David East commented: "We are all delighted that Graham has accepted this position and recognise that he brings with him vast experience and a deep understanding of the modern game. We are all convinced that Graham has the ability and the vision to take us forward from this difficult season and we are looking forward to 2002 with great anticipation".
