Ignominious defeat for record-seeking Devon CricInfo - 5 September 2001
Devon suffered their worst defeat in the 18-year history of the ECB 38 Counties Cup competition when they were thrashed in the final at Lord's by Norfolk. Seeking an unprecedented fourth win in the competition, they were skittled for 88 to lose by 114 runs. It was the lowest score by anybody in the final. Norfolk made 202-9 with opener Carl Rogers top-scoring with 54. Skipper Paul Newman hit the last two balls of the innings for four to take Norfolk past the 200 mark. Devon never recovered from being 7-2 - Gareth Townsend and captain Peter Roebuck, the former Somerset player, the men out - and continued to collapse with David Lye's 18 the top score. Off spinner Chris Brown wrapped up the lower order to finish with 4-15. © CricInfo Ltd.
