West Indies have been hit by fresh injury problems and the team was forced to leave for Sri Lanka without Jamaican batsman Wavell Hinds on Tuesday.
Hinds, a late replacement for the injured Shivnarine Chanderpaul, suffered a broken nose while batting at the Milo-Melbourne cricket festival on the weekend.
Bizarrely, the left-hander, batting without a helmet, was hit in the face by 48-year-old Joel Garner, who is now one of the national selectors, as he tried to hook a short delivery.
According to a West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) media release he suffered "swelling and bleeding in his nasal passage." Indeed, the injury is serious enough to demand surgery.
Hinds is scheduled to have surgery on Friday and if all goes well he will then rejoin the team in Sri Lanka a week later.
The injury means he could miss both the scheduled practice games on 3-5 and 8-10 November, which makes him doubtful for the first Test starting 13 November.
West Indies are scheduled to play three-Test matches and a tri-series in Sri Lanka and is their first visit for eight years.
