Lehmann leads SA to victory Valkerie Mangnall - 21 October 2001
South Australian captain Darren Lehmann led with bat and ball, spurring his team to an emphatic seven-wicket win over Victoria in the one-day cricket match at Adelaide Oval today. Lehmann took three wickets to help bowl the Bushrangers out for a lacklustre 177 in the 45th over of their innings. At stumps he remained unbeaten with 69 off 59 deliveries, including seven fours and a six, as SA cruised to 3-179 with more than 12 overs to spare to claim a bonus point. Ben Johnson hit a four off Ben Oliver to bring up the winning runs and was the other not out batsman with nine. Lehmann said the victory helped overcome any disappointment from only managing two first innings points rather than an outright win in the four-day match against Victoria, which ended in a draw on Saturday. "It was a really forceful win," he said after today's match. "I can't speak highly enough, it was just a really good team performance. "Our fielding and bowling was probably the best it's been for a couple of years. If we keep that up, we're going to compete with most sides all year." With SA spinner Brad Young ruled out after breaking a finger in the Pura Cup match, Lehmann stepped in and claimed 3-16 from five overs. The two-time Australian domestic cricketer of the year bowled Darren Berry, who was Victoria's third-highest run scorer with 17, and Shane Warne for five. Lehmann also claimed the prized scalp of Victorian one-day skipper Matthew Elliott, who overcame a groin injury - which had sidelined him for three days of the Pura Cup - to top score for his team. Elliott reached 84 off 106 deliveries, including seven fours, as team-mates' wickets tumbled around him. But his knock came to an end when he was caught at cover by Ryan Harris in the 44th over of the match. Four balls later, Jason Gillespie had Ian Hewett caught behind by Graham Manou for seven, wrapping up the Victorian innings and leaving Damien Fleming stranded without facing a delivery. Gillespie's fellow pacemen Mark Harrity and Paul Rofe chipped in with two wickets each as four Victorian batsmen failed to reach double figures before being dismissed. Rofe struck first for the Redbacks when he had opener Jason Arnberger caught by Jeff Vaughan for 11 in the eighth over. Michael Klinger (20) was the Bushrangers' second-highest scorer, coming in at number three in place of Brad Hodge, who pulled up with a knee injury after scoring a century in each innings of the Pura Cup match. But when Klinger and Jon Moss fell in quick succession, the Bushrangers looked brittle at 3-68. Elliott was clearly disappointed with his team's performance. "No excuses today," he said. "We really got a good start, our run rate was good, we just continued to lose wickets and lose wickets at the wrong time. "If you keep doing that, you'll keep making 170s and you'll keep getting beaten. We've just got to find a way to play a bit smarter." © 2001 AAP
