The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) is set to introduce Match Referees this season. Initially, the Match Referees will only be appointed for "important fixtures," but they are expected to play a more widespread role in the near future.
BCCSL Operations Director, Bandula Warnapura, himself a former international Match Referee, confirmed that referees would be used during forthcoming matches in the Under 23, P. Sara, and Premier League tournaments.
He explained: "We've brought in the Match Referees to bring more seriousness to the tournament and to instill greater discipline in the players."
However, unlike the international referees, the local referees will not be in a position to take immediate action against players who breach the code of conduct. Instead, incidents will be reported to the BCCSL disciplinary committee.
During the Promotion and Relegation tournament this year Match Referees were brought in for the first time in a trial basis.
Warnapura said only those who were involved in the game at the highest level and had a clean career record would be considered for the posts.
