Jaffna District Wins North East Inter-District Triangular Cricket Tournament 2001
Jaffna District beat Vavuniya District by 90 runs to win the final of the North East Inter-District Triangular Cricket Tournament 2001, which was held at Jaffna Central College Grounds, on the 31st of October.
Despite losing seven wickets for only 101 after winning the toss and electing to bat, Jaffna recovered to total 184 all out in 49 overs, with T. Gowribagan scoring 28 and
R. Sarjahan 25. In reply, Vavuniya were all out for 94 in 30.5 overs.
The triangular tournament, which also featured Batticaloa District, was organized by the Jaffna District Cricket Association and sponsored by the National Development Centre of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.
The President of the Jaffna District Schools Cricket Association Mr. S. Rajathurai, who is also the Principal of Jaffna Central College, was the Chief Guest. The Guest of Honour was Mr. S. Balakrishnan, former Secretary of the Jaffna District Schools Cricket Association. Awards were distributed by Mr. V.S. Balachandran of V.S.B. Group, Mr. S. Nagaratnam of E.S. Perambalam & Co., and Mr. Reginold of Lavanyas, sponsors of cricket in Jaffna. Also present was Mr. S.P. Rajievan, Co-ordinator of the Jaffna District Cricket Association
JDCA officials thanked the BCCSL for its sponsorship, and the Principals of Jaffna Central College, Jaffna College Vaddukottai, and St. John's College-Jaffna for offering their grounds. St. John's College-Jaffna provided accommodation for the visiting teams.
This tournament was first held in 1999, when Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Vavuniya Districts participated, with Batticaloa District winning the tournament.

First Match, Oct. 20 - Jaffna District beat Vavuniya District by eight runs
Jaffna 167 all out in 35 overs (S. Luxmikanth 31 n.o., R. Sarjahan 26)
Vavuniya 159 for nine wickets in 50 overs (Robison Roy 46 n.o., S. Luxmikanth 3 for 26)
Second Match, Oct. 21 Jaffna vs. Batticaloa was washed out due to rain
Third Match, Oct. 22 Vavuniya vs. Batticaloa was abandoned due to rain.
Vavuniya 136 all out in 43 overs (R. Ramanan 43, M. Nasseen 3 for 24)
Second Match was rescheduled and played on Oct. 25 Jaffna beat Batticaloa by 8 wickets
Batticaloa 101 all out in 36 overs (S. Vimalan 4 wickets for 9, R. Sahjahan 3 for 23)
Jaffna 102 for 2 wickets in 38 overs (T. Gowribagan 48 n.o., K. Sasiharan 35 n.o.)
Third Match was also rescheduled and played on Oct. 29, but was once again abandoned due to rain.
Batticaloa 147 for 3 wickets in 21 overs.
Jaffna qualified for the final by winning their two matches. Vavuniya also qualified due to a better overall aggregate than Batticaloa.
Final on 31st Oct. Jaffna beat Vavuniya by 90 runs
