Midlands report
Michael Hudgson - 30 November 2001

Last weekend the Kwekwe first team had a home game against Universals. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat.

Universals scored 236 runs in their allotted 50 overs with Ali Shah being the highest scorer with 49 runs, followed by Charles Coventry with 47 runs. The best bowlers for Kwekwe Sports Club were John Vaughan-Davies with three for 27 in 9.1 overs and Dave Houghton three for 45 in 10 overs.

Unfortunately the match was interrupted due to heavy rain, but with the help of the ground staff and some enthusiastic Kwekwe cricketers and fans the outfield was soon dried off and play was able to resume at 15.30 with the Duckworth-Lewis System coming into play. This meant that Kwekwe had to score 170 in 27 overs to win the match.

Kwekwe managed to score 158 for eight in their allotted 27 overs with G. Savoury being the highest scorer with 42 runs. Best bowlers for Universals were J. Nicholle who took three for 25 in four overs and David Mutendera who took two for 19 in six overs.

The Kwekwe second team hosted Alexandra Sports Club seconds on the Goldridge Primary School cricket field. Unfortunately individual statistics were not available at the time this report was prepared. It was also a rain-interrupted match, with the match being completed and the Duckworth-Lewis System once again been brought into play. The winners ultimately were Alexandra.

Kwekwe Queens Sports Club hosted Sunrise at Queens. Queens won the toss and elected to bat first. Queens managed to score 217 for eight when rain stopped play in the 43rd over. A early lunch was taken with the hope that the rain would subside and then play could resume, but unfortunately this was not to be and the match was finally abandoned due to a water-logged outfield.

Once again I have nothing to report from Gweru.

I am pleased to report that for the first time in Kwekwe all matches were officiated by official umpires, two of whom came from the Midlands.
