Rowe slaps ton but Burridge still overhaul Mike Vimpany - 29 May 2001
South Wilts skipper Russell Rowe cracked a superb 117 - only to finish on the losing side as Burridge snatched a dramatic penultimate-ball Southern Electric ECB Premier Division 1 victory at Botley Road. Burridge won by three wickets after a century opening partnership between Rowe and John Williams pointed South Wilts towards a formidable 240-7. Rowe totally dominated the 102-run start and flayed boundaries all around the ground, receiving support from Brendan Pauwels (36). But South Wilts' weak bowling attack was ruthlessly exposed as Paul Hawkins (54) and teenager Jo Dixon (27) put on 88 before Dave Jackson (55) and Hampshire's James Hamblin (60) linked up for key mid-innings stand. Burridge lost four wickets for 22 runs, but got home at 241-7 off the penultimate ball of the last over sent down by Rob Wade (3-26). Calmore Sports, last year's runners-up, are nailed to the basement after a six-wicket defeat at previously unsuccessful Liphook & Ripsley. Australian all-rounder Glen Motchal (52), Paul Draper (47) and James Rose (26) top scored in Calmore's 225-9 (Alan Crawford 3-40), which Liphook passed with some comfort. Steve Riley did the damage with a superb 117, containing 15 boundaries, while Hampshire YCs hopeful Chris Wright (67) played his part in a crucial 178-run opening partnership. Matt Swarbrick hit a century and Russell Hawkes celebrated his call up with a six-wicket haul as Bournemouth ended a two-match losing sequence by beating Andover by 111 runs at Chapel Gate. The Dorset opener, who flayed 101, dominated successive partnerships of 50 and 83 with Chris Park (16) and Tom Webley (22) before each of the teenage duo perished in run outs. Swarbrick, who squandered the opportunity of a sizeable century when he holed out on the boundary, got his ton out of 155-5 and left Bournemouth in mid-innings uncertainty. Stuart Rintoul (32) promptly strained a muscle but helped Bournemouth on to 215-9, Dean Woodhouse (4-31) breaking through as the later batsmen chased bonus points. Roger Miller's 35 took Andover to 60-2, but the middle-order completed caved in against Kwik-Fit car tyre fitter Russell Hawkes, who rejoiced in figures of five wickets for only two runs at one stage. Left-armer Hawkes, who bowls in-swing, finished with 6-11in eight overs as the visitors crumbled to a dismal 104 all out. Hungerford upset BAT Sports when they failed to arrive for the scheduled 11.30am start and found themselves on the receiving end of a six-wicket defeat. The match got away to a bizarre start, with Alex Barr (26) benefitting from three successive over-throws which raced to the boundary. But when Hampshire's Jason Laney fell cheaply, it was left to Danny Williams (63 not out) to help post 142 all out (Dave Carson 3-10). Richard Kenway (44) and Dave Banks (44 not out) led BAT to a comfortable seven-wicket win. © SEPL
