Having lost the first of the two tests at Lord's, Pakistan desperately need to win the second one at Old Trafford, which gets underway from May 31.

The details of Pakistan's previous appearances at Old Trafford are:

1954
The second, fourth and fifth days' play was washed out by rain. England won the toss, and batting first declared their innings at 359 for 8. Denis Compton scored 93 and Tom Graveney 65. Fazal Mahmood took 4 for 107 in 42 overs. Pakistan were dismissed for 90, the second time they had been dismissed for a score below 100 in the series. Following-on, Pakistan's first four wickets fell for just 10. They were 25 for 4 when rain intervened and thereafter no more play was possible. David Sheppard led England and AH Kardar led the visitors. Jim Parks, who later also kept wickets for England, made his debut along with James McConnon.

1987
Imran Khan led the visitors and Mike Gatting captained the home side. Pakistan won the toss. More than half of the allotted playing time of this opening test of the five match series was lost to rain. The last day was completely washed out. Neil Fairbrother made his debut for the home side. England made 447 in the first innings. Tim Robinson scored 166 in 528 minutes. Wasim Akram and Mohsin Kamal shared four wickets each. Imran Khan was unable to bowl in the match. Pakistan were 140 for 5 seven minutes before lunch on the fourth day when rains came and no further play was possible thereafter. Mansoor Akhtar scored 75 for the visitors. The match ended in a tame draw.

1992
Javed Miandad and Graham Gooch led the two teams. Pakistan won the toss and piled up 505 for 9 declared in their first innings. Aamer Sohail got his highest score in test career (205), which was also his maiden hundred in only the third test. Javed Miandad (88), Asif Mujtaba (57) and Rameez Raja (54) scored fifties. The second days' play was lost to rain. England, in reply, made 390. David Gower scored a classy 73 off 85 balls and useful half-centuries were scored down the order by Chris Lewis (55) and Ian Salisbury (50). The visitors used the final day for batting practice scoring 239 for 5. Rameez Raja scored the second half-century (88) of the match, which resulted in a draw.

Note: All the three test matches Pakistan have so far played at Old Trafford have not yielded results.
