Bob Merriman has been named as Deputy Chairman of the Australian Cricket Board (ACB), it was announced today.
The appointment was confirmed at the recent meeting of the ACB's Directors in Melbourne and Merriman, 65, will take up the role with immediate effect.
In announcing the appointment, ACB Chairman Denis Rogers said the creation of the position had become necessary for a number of reasons.
"The ACB Chairman has a number of responsibilities to fulfil and with the growth of the business of the game of cricket, those responsibilities are only likely to increase," said Mr Rogers.
"In the past, if the Chairman was unable to attend to any of his ACB duties, responsibility would fall to the previous Board Chairman.
"Given the fact that the previous Chairman, Alan Crompton, is no longer a Director, and also taking into account the imminent departure of the current Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Speed, it was felt necessary to appoint someone who could assume appropriate responsibilities where necessary. The Directors chose Bob Merriman to fill that role," Mr Rogers added.
Merriman has been an ACB Director since 1991, a member of the Victorian Cricket Association (VCA) Board since 1982 and has been VCA President since 1997.
He also served as Australian Team Manager from 1984 to 1986.
