Rains mar Patron’s Trophy (Grade I) sixth round
Mahmood Ahmad - 30 March 2001

Rain and subsequent wet ground conditions marred the 6th round of Patron's Trophy Grade I tournament, as all four matches of this round ended in draws. With one more round to be played in the tournament, it is still unclear whether Habib Bank and National Bank will be able to maintain their supremacy at the top of the point's table or some other teams will emerge as the winners and runners-up of the round robin league.

The greatest benefit of the bad weather certainly went to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) who were sent packing for 95 in their first innings against National Bank's (NBP) score of 210. NBP were 262 for six in their second innings and must be thinking of declaration when heavens opened up and rendered the play impossible on the third and fourth days.

Pakistan Customs, on the other hand, must the saddest team who were denied victory even after forcing Wapda to follow on in their first innings. But their undoing was not bad weather. It was the valiant knock of 171 not out by Wapda's middle order batsman, Adil Nisar, which ensured that the match didn't go Custom's way.

However, both NBP and Customs must be more than satisfied after getting three consolation points each, taking their point's tally to 36 and 28, respectively. They now end the sixth round, respectively, at number-two and -three positions in the point's table.

The leaders of the point's table are Habib Bank (HBL) who added three more points to their tally of 34, after drawing their sixth round encounter with Allied Bank.

ABL finish this with 15 points in their bag and they, along with PIA (13 points) and Khan Research Laboratories (10 points), are virtually out of reckoning in this competition. Rather, they face a tough battle in the last round of the competition so as to secure their places in the next year's competition, as according to the rules of the tournament, the two teams finishing at the bottom of the point's table shall not compete the tournament next year.

Agricultural Bank and Wapda, with 25 and 22 points respectively against their names are still in contention to book a place in the final of the competition to be played in Lahore from the 7th of next month.
