Unbeaten season for Uprising delevopment team Rob Bailey - 23 March 2001
Uprising Cricket Club was founded in 1999 as a developmental side drawing players mainly from Chitungwiza, Harare's equivalent of Soweto. They participated in the Mashonaland Vigne Cup Third League in the 1999-2000 season. During the season they played seven league matches, winning four, losing two, with one no result due to rain. They finished in third place in the league. Encouraged by this result, the club once again participated in the Vigne Cup Third League, as well as the National Fourth League, in the 2000-2001 season. Drawing on a pool of young and enthusiastic players, and playing out of Prince Edward School, the club had an extremely successful season, winning both the Mashonaland and National leagues as well as the National knockout competition. The team was ably captained by Jeff Muteerwa, who opened the bowling as well. Jeff led the team to 16 victories with no defeats during the season. Much of this success can be attributed to 18-year-old opening batsman Innocent Chinyoka, who scored 902 runs during the season at an average of 60.13. Chinyoka notched up three centuries during the season, including a club record 167 scored off 96 balls against Kwekwe Queens. Cluadious Mukandiwa and Arnold Katende were both outstanding all-rounders,while young Terry Savanhu, at the time a Prince Edward student, produced the fantastic return of 10-1-23-9 against Mabvuku. The club would like to thank Prince Edward School for the very generous use of their facilities during the past season, and look forward to a successful campaign in the higher leagues next season.
