ACB Cox takes out Pura Cup Player of the Series award
Australian Cricket Board - 23 March 2001

Tasmanian Tigers captain Jamie Cox has won the 2000-01 Pura Cup Player of the Series award, the Australian Cricket Board announced today.

Cox pockets $8000 for the award, which was voted by the two standing umpires on a 3-2-1 basis after each game of the series. He will also take home a Royal Salangor pewter tray, provided by National Foods.

Cox polled 24 votes, with the Western Warriors' Simon Katich second placed on 23 votes. Victorian Bushranger Brad Hodge finished third with 20 votes.

Playing all 10 games of the Pura Cup season, Cox scored his second-highest domestic first-class season aggregate - 1070 runs at an average of 66.88. The right-hander scored five centuries, including a highest score of 160 against the New South Wales Excell Blues at the Sydney Cricket Ground in February.

The 31-year-old became the leading run-scorer for Tasmania in first-class cricket when he overtook former Australian top-order batsman David Boon (9096 runs) during the year. Cox now has 9932 first-class runs for Tasmania.

Cox was also rewarded with Australia A selection this year. In the four-day first-class match against the West Indies at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, in December, the opener made 94 in Australia A's second innings.

On winning the award, Cox said:

"I've been close to winning this award in the past, and it's nice to have won it this year, albeit a shock. There were many other good players this year, particularly batsmen. It seems bat has dominated ball.

"After a disappointing season in England, I realised that if there was any chance of me playing for Australia, I needed to score heavily this year and I targeted 1000 runs as the bench mark.

"While the individual accolade is good to have, it's disappointing that the Tasmanian Tigers didn't perform better this year. Without our mid-season three-game slump, we might be in the Pura Cup final currently being played."
