Nigeria: Trials start for West African Quadrangular
21 March 2001
In the only league match played over the weekend FCC2 defeated Howzat Dolphins by 10 wickets; Dolphins having been dismantled for a mere 89 runs which FCC2 made for no loss. With the victory FCC2 move into 3rd place though having played a match extra compared to the three other 'Super 4' qualifiers.
League matches were suspended apart from the sole match as a result of the Nigeria Cricket Association (NCA) conducting trials for the 2001 West African Cricket Conference (WACC) Quadrangular due to hold in Freetown, Sierra Leone in its 13th edition.
Nigeria had been the sole winner of the championship for 10 editions up till 1998 when in Accra, Ghana it lost the regional title to Sierra Leone who retained the title last year in Banjul, The Gambia. Nigeria did not attend the Banjul games due to financial reasons.
Towards the 13th edition, the NCA has called for trials a total of 46 players drawn across the broad spectrum of Nigerian cricketers including all the players that represented the country at the last ACA Cup in Kenya as well as youngsters that featured in the U-19 championship in Uganda. Also players with consistent performances in the Lagos League as well as other leagues like the Kaduna one and the Eastern League.
The trials would be held over three weekends i.e 10th/11th, 17th/18th and 24th/25th March and a six-man Board of Selectors including five ex internationals Ewa Henshaw, Kwesi Sagoe, Kome Agodo , Seye Fadahunsi and Muyiwa Osundolire would oversee the process.
The Quadrangular is scheduled to hold from April 20th to 29th.
