Matabeleland v Manicaland, Logan Cup report Derrick Townshend - 16 March 2001
Matabeleland's second Logan Cup fixture this season was again hampered by the wet weather and the match only commenced on the second day after the lunch interval. Although the wicket was playable, certain areas of the outfield, particularly the northeastern corner of BAC, were saturated with water unable to drain away. It did emphasize however the importance and urgent need for suitable equipment to prevent such delays during to the World Cup in 2003, which will be played at a similar time of the year. There was one change to the side, young Greg Strydom making his debut in place of John Rennie who was unavailable. Matabeleland won the toss and elected to field in overcast conditions. Manicaland declared at 201 for nine (Stuart Matsikenyeri 28, Nkala two for 70, Mahachi two for 24, Engelbrecht three for 41). Matabeleland 122 for 5 (Vermeulen 44, Garda two for 16). Manicaland second innings 141 for 9 declared (Stuart Matsikenyeri 36, Engelbrecht 4 for 56 and Vermeulen three for 26), leaving Matabeleland to score 221 in 32 overs. After a brisk start between Coventry (43) and King (18), before the latter was unfortunately run out, the game then petered out into a tame draw. With two draws in the Logan Cup Matabeleland will have to win their next fixture convincingly if they are to have any chance of finishing near the top of the table. For the forthcoming fixture against Midlands in Bulawayo this weekend Matabeleland will field the same twelve players, as Streak will only be available for the following fixture. Rennie is also unavailable due to business commitments. It is hoped the weather will allow a full match despite predictions of more rain. © Cricinfo
