Club cricket returns to fore
Canterbury Cricket Association - 9 March 2001

This Sunday will see Christchurch Club Cricket return to the fore, with the Club Finals day, this year to be hosted by the Riccarton Cricket Club at Hagley Oval. Three finals will be played, senior men, senior women and second grade men.

The senior men's final will be played on Hagley 3 between Riccarton and East Shirley. These sides were the two top qualifiers and have shared the spoils in their two previous encounters this season, one in the round robin and one in the semi finals. These two sides have dominated the competition over the past three seasons and are both littered with representative players. East Shirley are at full strength and will have the services of Carl Anderson, Ryan Burson, Michael Papps, Marcel McKenzie and Andrew Ellis, all who have missed part of the season with rep commitments.

Riccarton will also field a strong side, calling on the experience of Gary Stead and Robbie Frew, while NZ Under 19 players Iain Robertson and Shanan Stewart are also back. Hayden Shaw, Darren Walker and Wayne Stead also provide further all round depth.

This game should be a very even affair.

The senior women's final will see defending champions Lancaster Park/Woolston take on Marist. Once again, both sides are at full strength. On paper, LPW seem stronger and have had the better of encounters during the season, but their only loss this season was at the hands of Marist. LPW will call on the experience of CLEAR White Ferns Haidee Tiffen and Paula Flannery, while five players from the Canterbury Under 21 squad will also help bolster their ranks. These players are Tabetha Waterus, Selena Charteris, Maria Fahey, Jo Strachan and Rebecca Steele.

Marist can all upon CLEAR White Fern Erin McDonald, while several of their ranks played State Insurance Cup over the summer. Players to watch for include Fiona Fraser, Erin Kelly and Sarah Helmore at the top of the order, while Vanessa Lord and McDonald should be hard to get away.

The second grade men's final will be between the Lancaster Park/Woolston Dragons and HSOB. The Dragons will have to go in as favourites, going through the preliminary rounds unbeaten, but HSOB are sure to provide stiff resistance.

The men's games start at 10.30am, while the women begin at 11am.
