On Monday Somerset Seconds travelled to New Road to take on Worcestershire in the one-day competition.

Somerset batted first and were all out for 211. Keith Parsons had a fine return after his knee injury and scored 112 from 129 balls. Michael Coles who has batted well in all his knock for the seconds continued his run of good form by scoring 40.

In reply Worcestershire were bowled out for 191 with Jamie Grove being the pick of the Somerset bowlers taking 3 for 45.

The seconds travel to Newport on Monday to play Glamorgan, Southampton on Wednesday to play Hampshire and then return to Taunton to play Glamorgan next Friday.

After the game the seconds coach Julian Wyatt said: "It was a good all round performance. Our bowlers bowled very well, but we should have scored more runs. We lost seven wickets for 50 runs which was an underachievement."

The coach was very impressed with Keith Parsons' hundred and said "Keith played very well and looked in touch. He looked particularly strong through the off side."

This year the one-day competition is played in four groups of five with each team playing the others on a home and away basis. At the end of the group matches the top team in each of the four groups goes through to the semi finals.

Somerset have now on both of their one day matches which the coach is delighted about. "This year we have got of to a good start which keeps interest alive in the competition matches," Wyatt said. "By the end of next week we will have a clearer view as to whether we will qualify for the next stage or not."

Somerset Second XI v Gloucestershire Second XI, Championship Match (Day One)

At the end of a long day for the Somerset fielders a strong Gloucestershire side amassed 405 for 4 at The County Ground in Taunton.

The visitors runs came from Rob Cunliffe who was unbeaten on 113, Tim Hancock who made 101, Ian Flanagan who made 76 and Chris Budd who remained 51 not out at the close of play.

Matt Bulbeck returned from injury and ended the day with 22 overs 4 maidens 1 for 67, whilst Keith Parsons, who was skippering the team bowled 11 overs 3 maidens and ended with 1 for 26.

After watching him bowl Julian Wyatt told me: "Bully looks as if he is getting close to his old form again, but he still needs to get some more overs under his belt."
