Fernando to submit match-fixing report at end of June
Rex Clementine Fernando - 8 June 2001

Desmond Fernando is to submit his report into match-fixing allegations concerning Sri Lankan players at the end of this month.

Fernando was appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka to look into the allegations made by Indian bookmaker Mukesh Gupta that Sri Lanka's former captains, Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva, accepted money to underperform during their 1994 tour of India.

Fernando, a lawyer by profession, told CricInfo that the two players concerned co-operated with him very well during his inquiries, in which two members of the ICC'S anti-corruption unit participated as well.

Fernando added that he had also questioned the manager of that tour. However, Fernando failed to meet Mukesh Gupta, the man who had made the allegations, despite going to New Delhi.

The CBI report, published last November, stated that Gupta had said that he had paid both Ranatunga and De Silva to under-perform during that tour. Sri Lanka lost the series 3-0, all defeats by an innings, and both De Silva and Ranatunga had a disastrous tour. De Silva finished the series with a total of 70 runs in six innings with an average of 11.66 while his skipper Ranatunga scored 107 runs at an average of 17.83.
